But your landlord may be right that it is not possible to accurately tell how the bed bugs got into your place. You might have brought them in without knowing from traveling somewhere (they often arrive uninvited in people's suitcases).

My opinion was only validated, at least in my own mind, by the fact that the store-bought pesticide my dad was using was not getting the job done. Time and time again, after he applied the chemical, we would still have bugs.

It was only after some "Pest Control 101" during my first days in the industry that I realized error in my dad's ways. It had more to do with the misapplication, location, product selection, and severity of infestation than anything else- but that's another story. Truth be told, he would have seen much better results if he had just read the pesticides' instructions.

So...just how do pesticides work?

The answer to the above question can be very complicated and depends on the type of pesticide used. For sake of simplicity, however, we'll focus on the most common reason for death, caused by the most common method of application - "spraying".

As a youth, I would look at a treated surface with my naked eye and just assume there was nothing there. What I didn't understand was that, even dry, a treated surface has millions of bug-killing microns.

Microns are a unit of measurement; they're approximately 1/100th the diameter of a human hair, which is to say they are REALLY small.

As a pest walks through a treated surface, microns of the killing agent (called the active ingredient) get picked up by the insect's pads, antenna, or hairs. It only takes about three of these active ingredient microns to prove lethal to our six-legged nuisance.

What do the active ingredients do?

Insects have a nervous system similar to mammals. Their nervous system is made up of nerve cells that pass an impulse from one point, to the brain, then illicit a response back to that sensory point. Many pesticides exploit the system's "shut off valve", meaning the impulses continue to fire over and over (or in some cases never start).

Imagine feeling pain never stops, hunger pains that don't go away, or even the smallest sensations that just compile and compile and compile on top of each other. Eventually, the pest becomes over loaded and dies because their organs and nervous system shut down.

In some cases, as mentioned above, the pesticide's active ingredients may keep nerve impulses from ever firing. This includes the impulses that are vital to keep organs working (triggering the heart beat for example).

So now that you know how most pesticides work, pull out those cans of "rid-a-bug" and give them another chance. This time, however, know their limitations and, by all means, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.

Pesky Squatter

I examined all the corners of our new condo for missed dust bunnies and considered scrubbing the base boards when he tapped on the door.

"Hi, I'm the pest inspector."

The husky man removed his shoes and the encroachment began. When he peered in the closets, I felt invaded and fought off feeling guilty for my hidden clutter.

"Just one cobweb in that corner." He pushed it off the ceiling with his stick. Darn! I missed that one. "I don't see any spiders, termites, or ants."

"Good." I showed him our outside crawl space and explained the previous owner couldn't find the padlock key.

"I'll unscrew the hinge, if you don't mind." I agreed. "Seen any critters hanging around?"

"No." I frowned. He heaved a sigh and ducked into the space, and then bumped his head while running out.

"What?"

"Something big is under there. Like a skunk or something."

"I haven't seen - or smelled anything."

Reluctantly, he crept through the small door.

"There are several big puddles under here."

I heard a rustling noise like a jack rabbit running through high weeds, then a splash like after a huge trout jumps. I backed up. He resurfaced.

"Biggest bull frog I've ever seen." He chuckled. I hid my giggle at his previous skittishness.

He re-fastened the crawl space door. I accepted the clean pest inspection and listened to his advice for preventing the water collection.

Stop Bed Bugs From Biting - Right Here and Right Now - Privately and Without Any Chemicals

These are the steps you must follow if you want to get that first of many, good night's sleep. Following these steps can get rid of Bed Bugs from biting you as you sleep without the need for any chemicals whatsoever. In fact, this article will explain how to do it yourself, as we know that this situation can be a very stressful one and many people are quite embarrassed about their infestation with these particular pests.

How do I know this? My home was invaded by these pests long before I knew what those marks on my body were. I did not know the difference between the Bed Bugs rash and mosquito bites that were scattered around on my skin. Once I got to the cause of the problem, countless hours were spent on the internet looking for a solution. There were many theories that were out there, but I concluded there was only one way to guarantee that they were not going to bite me from that point on.

I came up with some steps on how to get rid of them by myself. No chemicals were used to get them out of the sleeping area. Remember, this is just a temporary fix in order to get a good night's sleep right now. This will work until you are ready to tackle the problem as a whole and get rid of them privately from your entire home.

These are the steps you must take:

1 - You must strip your bed down to nothing. Put all the linens and pillows into a plastic bag and either throw the pillows away, wash and dry them if possible and wash and dry everything else. Best results would be to go straight to the washer with this bag as to not let any bugs escape along the way. Wash them with hot water and dry them on high, as the higher temperatures will kill them. If not washing them, then a 30 - 40 minute or longer, hot drying cycle should do the trick. I personally threw my pillows away and purchased some cheap, new ones until I was confident that I was totally rid of the pests.

2 - Move your bed away from everything. Bed Bugs can't fly so just make sure your bed isn't touching anything.

3 - Now vacuum both sides of your mattress. Do not take this step lightly. I stood mine up on it's side while resting on a piece of plastic sheeting. You HAVE to make sure you lift the little seams and tags and visually inspect both sides of the mattress and the box springs, for any bugs or eggs. I actually did this step twice. After the first vacuum round, I dumped the contents into a double plastic bag and went straight to the trash can outside of my home. I emptied the contents of the vacuum after the second round too. You also have to check and vacuum or wipe the bed frame itself. Every little seam can hold these pests. (You can actually put the vacuuming step off at first and just go straight to the next step if time is a factor.)

4 - Now take some plastic sheeting (example: like painters or contractors use) and duct or wide masking tape, or purchase an actual Bed Bug proof encasement for your mattress AND box springs. You have to wrap your bed up with one of these 2 ways and make sure that all holes are taped closed. They can actually be living INSIDE of these.

5 - When you put your pillows, sheets and blankets back on the bed, you have to shake those out in another room and make sure they also are bug-free.

6- Place some double-sided tape around the posts of your bed. Most people don't have that handy (I didn't) so just use the masking or duct tape and wrap it around the posts so the sticky side is facing out. I have a metal-framed bed with wheels so it was tough to do this. So, what I did was, take a few strips and made a nice flat patch, about 6" x 6" or so, depending on the size of your bed posts, and I carefully placed them facing up under each one of the posts. Something similar to the sticky-traps that they sell for bugs and mice, but the tape won't destroy your bed.

7 - Lastly, before you climb into bed, you must make sure your body is bug-free. Also be aware that you can't let your blanket or pillow touch the floor or wall or even the nightstands, so don't use an over-sized blanket. As long as you follow these steps, you can be assured you can have a bite-free sleep. This will buy you the extra time you will need to address the rest of your spaces.

These are the steps I believe are necessary to be 100% sure you will not be having these pests biting you tonight. Sadly, this is just the first step in getting yourself and home, free of these pests forever. There has to be a larger scaled effort for the rest of your home to be Bed Bug free.

Pantry Pests: How To Avoid Getting Them In Your Famous Sugar Cookies

Like a lot of people during the holiday season, I love to bake. Cookies, cakes and muffins, I can't ever get enough time to make everything I want to make during the holidays. I enjoy baking and really love to give away my baked goods to friends, family and neighbors. This past weekend I was starting to mix together a batch of my famous sugar cookies, when I dipped my cup measure into the flour bag and pulled out what appeared to be a little brown moth. Because I'm especially jumpy around bugs, I predictably tossed the measuring cup into the air and let out a pretty big screech. Admittedly this was a complete over-reaction to a tiny bug in a cup of flour, but seeing a bug in my flour bag has never happened before and it was completely unexpected. So after calming myself down, cleaning up the newly floured kitchen counter tops (and getting my husband to pick up the little bug and put it safely into an empty baby food jar), I headed straight to my laptop to do a Google search for "bugs in flour". This brought up a multitude of results, including flour weevils, flour beetles and eventually I came across the term "pantry pests".

The definition of pantry pests, as I found out through my research, is pests that have an appetite for foods that are stored in the pantry, as one might have guessed. This can include a multitude of different bugs, including:

Rice Weevils and Granary Weevils: Both these weevils are dark red to brown in color and vary in size from 1/8 of an inch to 3/16 of an inch long. They both have a long 'snout' that projects from their head and have covers over their wings that have distinctive ridges.
Sawtoothed Grain Beetle and Merchant Grain Beetle: These two beetles are quite similar in their slenderness, both are flat and brow and only about 1/10 of an inch long. These beetles both have six saw-like tooth projections on each side of the thorax. You can tell the difference between these two beetles by the size of their eyes: the sawtoothed grain beetle has smaller eyes than the merchant grain beetle and a larger area right behind the eyes.
Indian Meal Moths: The most common pantry pest, is a small moth with reddish-brown forewings that have a copper color to their outer wings and have whitish gray bodies.
Confused Flour Beetles: these beetles have shiny bodies that are reddish-brown and about 1/7 of an inch long. They are oval and look almost flattened. The antennae on the head get larger towards the tip and end in a four segmented club shape.
Red Flour Beetles: these look a lot like the Confused flour beetle, but the antennae end in a three segmented club shape.

I recognized the bug trapped in my empty baby food jar to be a Confused Flour Beetle. Now I needed to figure out why I had this little guy taking up residence in my cupboard. Apparently these pests are quite common, so I was amazed that I'd never come across one before. Almost everything I read said that these pests are brought into the home on food products you've purchased at the store, so this little guy had probably been in my flour since the flour departed the warehouse in which it was stored.

I also did some research to find out what kind of problems these pests can cause. I think I would have preferred to stay in the dark about some of these things, but I learned that pantry pests contaminate food with their bodies and their byproducts. Some of these pests produce byproducts that are less than appetizing (silk strings called frass), and the body parts of some types of beetles can actually irritate your mouth, throat and stomach if ingested. Not that you would ever choose to purposely ingest these, but if you eat something that has been contaminated with these bugs, you might not realize it until the irritation sets in. According to what I found on the net, these pests can also introduce microbes into food that may produce mycotoxins, which are highly carcinogenic compounds. I was starting to wish I'd never decided to make sugar cookies.

After a little more research, I set to cleaning out my cupboards. I pulled everything out and inspected each item carefully for more bugs. I put items that were stored in paper, foil or thin plastic into large plastic or glass cannisters, or in the freezer to keep them safe. After that, I started cleaning. Spills, crumbs and even some strange sticky spots were all removed from my pantry shelves to make sure I'd never see another pest inside my cupboard doors. I was surprised to learn that these insects will also breed in rodent baits, so I made sure to check the two mice traps we have in the basement, as well as the one in the bathroom. I dislike mice even more than insects, so the traps needed to stay, but I wanted to make sure they weren't breeding uninvited visitors.

After all of this, I have not seen another pantry pest in my home. But it's only been a week. I'm keeping an eye on the situation, and making sure that my cupboards stay clean and well organized.
